dussehra

Dussehra is a Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is a gazetted holiday in India, which is marked on the 10th day of the bright half of the seventh month according to the Hindu calendar.

Dussehra celebrations include processions to a river or ocean front that carry clay statues of Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya, accompanied by music and chants, after which the images are immersed into the water for dissolution and a goodbye.

Elsewhere, on Dussehra, the towering effigies of Ravana symbolizing the evil are burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction.Dussehra is predominantly a northern Indian festival. Delhi and Varanasi are popular places to witness the celebrations.
